A park at Christmas is a different product from the same park in August: shorter daylight, a partial ride line-up and a Santa experience that is often sold as a separate timed ticket. The three parks below each publish their own dates, inclusions and ride closures, and those differences matter more than the theming when you are choosing a day out. If you are weighing a bigger festive day instead, our Alton Towers guide covers the same decisions of dates, tickets and hotels at another UK park. Use this comparison to match the event to your children's ages and to your appetite for paying for extras.

If you are still choosing between parks at other times of year, the wider picture sits in our guide to the best theme parks in Europe; for a Christmas decision, start with who is in your group and what they will actually ride.

Why a park Christmas event is not a summer day out

Winter events run on selected dates rather than daily, and the ride line-up is deliberately reduced while coasters and water rides go into maintenance. That means the value of the day sits in the shows, the grotto, the lights and a handful of family rides, not in bagging every headline coaster.

Tickets are usually dated and often cheaper the earlier you book, and the Santa experience can be a separate timed slot on top of admission. Budget for both, and check whether your chosen ticket includes the Christmas Village or grotto before you compare prices across parks.

The three parks compared

Drayton Manor in Staffordshire runs Magical Christmas with Thomas Land rides, an Enchanted Christmas Grotto, a SEND grotto, an Aladdin pantomime and an end-of-day lake show. It suits families with younger children who want a compact festive programme with a strong Thomas theme.

Chessington World of Adventures in Surrey combines a Christmas Village led by elves with selected theme park rides, the zoo and SEA LIFE, plus a pantomime and carollers. The mix of animals and rides makes it the most varied option for mixed-age families.

Paultons Park on the edge of the New Forest pairs Peppa Pig World with Valgard, Tornado Springs and Lost Kingdom for the festive season, with stage shows and illuminations. It is the natural pick for families with pre-schoolers who also want a few genuine family coasters.

Dates and opening patterns

Drayton Manor's Magical Christmas runs on selected dates between 28 November and 24 December, so your visit has to fit a published date rather than any day in December. Book around the date that works for your group before choosing add-ons.

Chessington's Christmas Village operates on selected dates from 21 November to 24 December and closes between 27 and 31 December, so a Twixmas visit there will not include Santa. Plan a Christmas Village day before the 24th if meeting Father Christmas is the point of the trip.

Paultons runs its Christmas event on selected open dates during December through to 3 January, and the park opens at 10:00 with rides closing at 16:30 in December. The short December day rewards arriving at opening rather than late morning.

Tickets and what each entry includes

Drayton Manor prices Magical Christmas entry from £25 per person when booked by the end of September, with upgrades available, and every guest including babies and toddlers needs a valid ticket. Early booking is the lever here, so decide your date well ahead of the season.

Chessington sells a Christmas Village plus theme park ticket from £32 per person and a theme park only ticket from £24 per person, with under-90cm guests entering free. The theme park only ticket excludes the Christmas Village and Father Christmas, so choose carefully if Santa is on the agenda.

At Paultons, Santa's Storytime and the Christmas Wish stage shows are included in admission, while a grotto visit carries an additional charge and must be pre-booked at the extras step. That split makes Paultons attractive if you want festive entertainment without buying a Santa slot.

Santa's grotto experiences and how they are sold

Drayton Manor prices both its Enchanted Christmas Grotto and its SEND Christmas Grotto at £12.50 per person, and the grotto ticket does not include theme park admission. The Enchanted Grotto includes Mrs Claus storytime, reindeer food making, a Santa meet and greet, a small gift per child and a hot drink per adult.

The SEND grotto at Drayton Manor is designed for children with additional needs, with reduced sensory stimulation, extra time with Father Christmas and a fully wheelchair-accessible setting. Families who find standard grotto queues difficult should book this version rather than the main one.

Chessington builds the grotto into the Christmas Village as its fourth stop, with a timed village entry slot chosen at booking; the slot is when you enter the village, not when you meet Father Christmas. Arrive for that slot rather than queuing early, and expect the Toy Workshop to follow the grotto as the final stop.

Rides open and closed for winter maintenance

Chessington keeps most rides running but lists Tiger Rock, Vampire, River Rafts, Zufari, Barrel Bail Out!, Croc Drop and Seastorm as closed for essential maintenance over Christmas. Ride availability can still shift with weather, and the park app carries the day's list.

Paultons publishes separate open and closed ride lists for its Christmas event, with Drakon, Vild Swing, Storm Chaser, Cyclonator and the Peppa Pig World rides among those open. Check the published lists against your children's favourites, since several headline rides close for winter maintenance in December.

Drayton Manor's Christmas ride line-up includes Accelerator, The Bounty Pirate Ship, Jolly Buccaneer, the Carousel, Troublesome Trucks Runaway Coaster and a long list of Thomas Land attractions. For a young Thomas fan, that selection is the reason to choose Drayton over a bigger park with more coasters shut.

Shows and entertainment included in admission

Drayton Manor runs an Aladdin pantomime in Falls Theatre within Frontier Falls, alongside festive Thomas Land balcony shows, a Rory and Lory Christmas show and a Magical End of Day Lake Show with a 30-metre water curtain. The lake show gives the day a fixed finale, so plan your exit around it rather than leaving early.

Chessington includes a Christmas panto on the Mane Stage and carollers under the Adventure Point tree in every entry ticket, with a Cinderella panto new for 2026. Those shows fill the gaps between ride slots and give younger children something to watch when a ride is closed.

Paultons includes Santa's Storytime until 24 December and a Frosty the Snowman show with snowflakes through 3 January, staged under cover at the Show Stage with no pre-booking needed. The covered seating is useful on a wet December afternoon when you want a break from the cold.

Festive food and shopping

Paultons serves a Yorky Wrap of Yorkshire pudding, turkey, pig in blanket, vegetables, stuffing and cranberry sauce, alongside festive burgers and mince pies, and its gift shops include the Peppa's Toy Shop and Big Toy Shop. A sit-down festive lunch is a sensible way to break up a short December day.

Drayton Manor offers fire pits for toasting marshmallows and a Christmas gift range that includes animal adoptions and annual passes. Marshmallow toasting is the kind of low-cost extra that keeps children happy between rides without another ticket.

Which event suits toddlers and young children

Paultons is the strongest fit for pre-schoolers: Peppa Pig World is decorated for Christmas, Peppa and George appear in festive outfits, and the Peppa ride list stays largely open. Combine that with the included stage shows and you have a full day without paying for a grotto.

Drayton Manor competes on Thomas Land, where a large cluster of gentle rides stays open through the event, and the enclosed grotto format with a gift and hot drink suits small children. If your toddler is Thomas-mad, that theming outweighs the wider ride choice at Chessington.

Which event suits older children and teens

Chessington offers the broadest day for older children, with World of Jumanji and World of PAW Patrol rides running alongside the zoo and SEA LIFE, so a teenager has more than a grotto to work with. Note that Vampire, Croc Drop and Zufari are among the closed rides, which trims the thrill options.

Paultons keeps Drakon, Storm Chaser and the Lost Kingdom rides open, which gives older siblings real coasters while younger children stay in Peppa Pig World. That split works well for mixed-age families who would otherwise have to choose between a toddler day and a ride day.

Hotels and Christmas short breaks

Chessington sells Christmas short breaks from £62 per person based on a family of four, including a resort hotel night, Christmas Village and theme park entry, breakfast, parking and hotel entertainment. That bundle removes the parking and breakfast line items you would otherwise add to a day ticket.

Drayton Manor's Magical Christmas Stay and Play package pairs a full event day and grotto visit with an overnight stay in its four-star hotel and a festive breakfast. Paultons sells official breaks with a second park day free, an overnight stay at a nearby hotel and breakfast.

Annual passholders at Christmas

Drayton Manor's Ultimate, Platinum and Gold annual passholders get free entry to Magical Christmas and only buy tickets for specific experiences such as the grotto or pantomime. Chessington annual passes start from £64 and cover Christmas, but passholders still pre-book a Christmas Village slot and a separate theme park entry.

If you hold a Merlin pass for Chessington, the rules on pre-booking and blackout dates are worth understanding before the festive season; our Merlin annual pass guide explains the tiers and booking process.

Quieter days and picking your date

All three events run on selected dates rather than every day, so the calendar itself limits choice; weekdays in early December are usually the calmest, while the days closest to Christmas fill first. Book the grotto slot when you book entry, since grotto times are limited and can sell out before the park does.

At Chessington, choose a Christmas Village entry slot that leaves time to ride before or after, because the slot controls village entry only and the theme park opens at 10:00. At Paultons, an opening-time arrival gives you the full six and a half hours before rides close.

Getting there and planning around the weather

The three parks sit in different parts of England: Drayton Manor near Tamworth in Staffordshire, Chessington in Surrey on the edge of London, and Paultons at Ower near Romsey in Hampshire. Choose by drive time as much as by event, since a short December day loses value if you spend two hours each way in the car.

Rain and wind affect ride availability at all three, and Drayton Manor explicitly notes that weather may affect rides during Magical Christmas. Build in an indoor show or the zoo and SEA LIFE at Chessington as a wet-weather fallback so a closed coaster does not derail the day.

Plan Your Christmas Park Day

Pick Paultons for pre-schoolers and mixed-age families who want included shows and a strong Peppa line-up, Drayton Manor for Thomas-mad younger children and a compact grotto format, and Chessington for older children who want animals and rides alongside the Christmas Village. In each case, buy the entry ticket and the grotto slot together and check the published ride closure list before you commit to a date.

Use each park's official calendar and app on the morning of your visit for live ride availability, and book early where early-booking pricing applies.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which UK theme park is best for Christmas?

It depends on your children's ages. Paultons suits pre-schoolers and mixed-age families, Drayton Manor suits younger Thomas fans, and Chessington offers the widest day with animals, SEA LIFE and selected rides alongside its Christmas Village.

Do you pay extra to see Santa at a theme park Christmas event?

At Drayton Manor the Enchanted and SEND grottoes are paid add-ons that do not include park admission. At Chessington, Father Christmas is part of the Christmas Village, so you need the Christmas Village plus theme park ticket rather than the theme park only ticket. At Paultons, stage shows are included but a grotto visit must be pre-booked as an extra.

What rides are open at theme parks at Christmas?

Each park publishes its own list. Chessington and Paultons name rides closed for winter maintenance, while Drayton Manor lists the rides open during Magical Christmas. Ride availability can change with weather, so the park app carries the day's position.

Is a theme park Christmas event worth it for toddlers?

Yes, if you choose a park with a strong young-child line-up. Paultons keeps much of Peppa Pig World open and includes stage shows, while Drayton Manor keeps a large cluster of Thomas Land rides running through the event.

Can annual passholders get into Christmas events for free?

Drayton Manor's Ultimate, Platinum and Gold passholders get free entry to Magical Christmas and only pay for specific experiences. Chessington passholders still pre-book a Christmas Village slot and a separate theme park entry.

When do theme park Christmas events start and finish?

Drayton Manor runs selected dates from 28 November to 24 December, Chessington from 21 November to 24 December with the Christmas Village closed 27 to 31 December, and Paultons on selected December dates through to 3 January.
